Saginaw, MI — A disturbing discovery was made on the morning of June 27 by a woman at her East Side Saginaw home. Hearing a commotion outside, she stepped onto her porch to find a small black cat with a chain around its neck, tethered to her porch rail.
“Somebody had tied him to her porch,” said Rachel Horton, Director of Saginaw County Animal Care and Control. “She was very upset by it.” The woman immediately contacted authorities, and Animal Control officers responded to the scene on Spruce Street near Garey Street.
Video footage released by Animal Control shows the cat struggling to free itself from the chain, which was secured with a padlock. Officers successfully removed the chain and freed the cat, estimated to be 1 to 2 years old.
“He’s a really nice cat,” Horton said. “Now that he’s not stressed from being on a chain, he’s coming out of his shell. He’s been very friendly, loving, and open.”
The cat, currently unnamed and undergoing a seven-day stray hold, will be vaccinated, neutered, and put up for adoption if no owners come forward. Despite being slightly underweight, the cat has no significant injuries from the chain.
“It doesn’t look like the chain did a lot of damage,” Horton added.
Anyone with information regarding the cat’s ownership or how it ended up chained to the porch is urged to contact Saginaw County Animal Care and Control at 989-797-4500.
