Innisfil resident Lynn van der Valk is making strides in developing the Meowseum, Canada’s first Cat Museum. Currently organizing special events across Ontario and Quebec, the Meowseum aims to eventually secure a permanent location in Montreal within five years.
The first event, held in May at a Campbellville farm sanctuary, featured children’s crafts, a vendor market, and farm tours. Co-founded by van der Valk and Montreal resident Aqeela Nahani, the Meowseum aspires to become a charity, offering exhibits, a cat sanctuary, a feline-themed play area, and event space.
Van der Valk, a lifelong cat lover with five cats of her own, emphasizes the educational component of the museum, aiming to dispel misconceptions about cats and highlight their historical importance. She hopes to create a space where cat enthusiasts can connect and share their passion.
The idea for the Meowseum began when van der Valk and Nahani met in 2022 and bonded over their love of felines. Inspired by similar museums worldwide, they hope to offer an alternative to the popular cat cafes in the Greater Toronto Area.
Van der Valk’s love for cats began in childhood when her family adopted her grandparents’ cats. She has rescued many cats throughout her life, fostering a deep affection for animals. If the Meowseum secures a permanent space, van der Valk plans to focus on the sanctuary element, drawing on her experience with farm sanctuaries and cat rescues.
The Meowseum co-founders seek input on exhibit ideas, volunteers, and venues for future events. Van der Valk highlights the museum’s mission to share the joy and education of cats, inviting the community to support this new organization.
