Marion County Animal Services has announced an immediate suspension of all cat intakes, adoptions, and shelter-neuter-releases following an outbreak of Feline Panleukopenia, commonly known as Panleuk. The highly contagious virus affects the gastrointestinal system, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia, and is often fatal, with sudden death being a common symptom.
Animal Services Director Kyra Lynch emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We are taking this very seriously and dedicating this time to eliminate the virus from our environment to prevent further spread.”
The shelter plans to resume cat intakes and adoptions in approximately one week, after ensuring the virus has been effectively contained. In the interim, individuals with cat emergencies are urged to contact 352-671-8700 before bringing them to the shelter for assistance.
