The Mount Barker District Council is considering new regulations to keep new cats permanently confined to their homes. At last week’s Council meeting, members agreed to seek community input on proposed by-law changes that would restrict all cats born from January 2025 from going outside, unless under close supervision and control.
This proposal marks an escalation from the current curfew laws and aligns with similar restrictions introduced by the neighbouring Adelaide Hills Council in 2022, which prevent cats from roaming freely outside. The primary objectives of this change are to protect wildlife from harm and to reduce the nuisance caused by free-roaming cats to other residents.
A three-week public consultation will open on the Yoursay website starting Wednesday, June 26, 2024, inviting feedback from the community.
