The streets of a Sussex town are coming alive with color and creativity as 15 murals, including a striking giant orange cat, adorn buildings and blank walls, all part of the Look Again Newhaven festival.
These eye-catching artworks, designed to represent the community, local landscape, nature, and history, aim to change people’s perceptions of the town.
Danny McEvoy, already known for his collection of cat figurines outside his house, is delighted with the latest addition—a giant mural by artist Bec Dennison. “I just think it’s quite a good, it’s just a laugh and it’s a really fun thing to do when you see cats on the wall and big giant cat mural,” he shared with ITV News.
With 14 artists involved across 16 sites, visitors can follow a trail to ensure they don’t miss any of the vibrant artworks. Over two-thirds of the creators are local to Sussex, with workshops engaging school children and teenagers both in and out of the classrooms.
Anthony Peters, co-organizer of the Look Again Supergraphics mural festival, explained the festival’s name: “We wanted to give people from the town a reason to look again at the town and people from outside of the town a reason to come and visit and reassess the town that they probably dismiss in some respect. We just wanted to bring joy and pride.”
