Visitors to Ely Country Park in Cambridgeshire have been noticing a new furry presence—a ginger cat named Teddy—frequenting the park and a nearby Sainsbury’s store, reminiscent of the late Garfield, a beloved local feline. Garfield, affectionately known as Mr. Sainsbury’s for his affinity for the store and its shoppers, was memorialized with a bronze statue in the park after his death in 2019.
Hihine Lor, Teddy’s owner, mentioned that people who have seen Teddy at the park say it’s as if he knows about Garfield. Teddy, nearly three years old, began exploring Garfield’s old haunts—the store and the park—despite being born after Garfield’s death.
“Teddy seems to love Sainsbury’s and, like Garfield, he gets into people’s cars,” Ms. Lor shared, expressing some concern for Teddy’s safety. Equipped with tags and a GPS tracker, Teddy’s whereabouts are always known to Ms. Lor, though she often receives calls from people thinking he is lost.
As Teddy’s park visits and social media appearances grew, Ms. Lor created a Facebook group dedicated to him. Photos of Teddy at Garfield’s memorial have been widely shared, showing Teddy’s comfort and frequent presence at these locations.
“He could go anywhere, but he’s choosing these places—Sainsbury’s and the park. It’s almost as though the baton has been passed on,” Ms. Lor reflected.
