MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department has arrested and charged a man accused of drowning his roommate’s cat.
On May 21, officers received a call from the Animal Emergency Center on Summer Avenue. According to the affidavit, a cat named Gata was taken to the hospital after the owner was alerted by his roommate. Officers say that Stoniquco Smith, the roommate, called the owner to tell him the cat had been severely injured. Smith later told police that he put the cat in its kennel and placed it in a bathtub with running water. When the owner arrived home, he found the cat on the bathroom floor seizing and gasping for air. Police say that the cat was then taken to the hospital where it later had to be euthanized due to its condition.
Smith was taken into police custody and is now facing charges for aggravated animal cruelty.
