The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is on a mission to find a loving home for a courageous black cat named Gills, who, it is believed, endured a harrowing ordeal after being struck by a car and losing both of his eyes. The animal welfare organization issued a press release on Friday, shedding light on Gills’ remarkable journey to recovery.
Thought to be a 2-year-old stray, Gills’ resilience has been nothing short of miraculous, according to the MSPCA. Discovered injured in Dorchester by Boston Animal Control, he was promptly transported to the Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain on the evening of May 10.
“Honestly, Gills was in really tough shape when he came to us,” remarked MSPCA Boston Adoption Center Director Deborah Bobek. “He had multiple fractures on his face, and he was in immense pain.”
Under the expert care of veterinarian Rebecca Fellman, Gills embarked on a challenging road to recovery, beginning with the removal of one eye and the repair of a fractured jaw. Despite the daunting obstacles, Gills displayed remarkable resilience.
“After that first procedure, Gills woke up purring, and he was very sweet despite everything that he was going through,” shared Fellman. “So we were confident that he had the fighting spirit needed to see this through.”
Subsequent surgeries followed, including the removal of Gills’ second eye on May 16. Currently recuperating in foster care, Gills is on the path to healing, thanks to the dedicated efforts of his caregivers.
With a hopeful outlook, the MSPCA is reaching out to the community in hopes of reuniting Gills with his family. “It’s possible that Gills is someone’s beloved pet who was badly injured when he got loose,” explained Bobek. “Often, it can be really overwhelming when people lose a pet. They might not know how and where to report it and who to ask for help.”
Should Gills’ family not come forward, the MSPCA stands ready to facilitate his adoption, ensuring that he finds a forever home where he can thrive and receive the love and care he deserves.
