Rob and Caroline Stovall’s passion for cats led to the opening of Whiskers and Soda Cat Cafe in Dallas last year, in collaboration with the cat rescue group A Voice for All Paws. “There’s something about spending time with a cat that is happy to be with you,” muses Rob Stovall. “It gives people such an intrinsic feeling of value and peace.”
Cat cafes like Whiskers and Soda are not places to bring your own pet; instead, they serve as foster homes where rescue cats can socialize and potentially find new families. “We wanted a setting where [cats] could live, be in their home, be comfortable and relaxed, know they’re safe,” Stovall shares. “You want [potential adopters] to be in the best environment possible with cats that are not stressed out.”
The cafe’s design prioritizes the needs of the cats, with humans as invited guests. Stephen Foland, a Dallas engineer, and his 11-year-old daughter spent six months visiting the cafe before adopting Annie, a short-haired cat with a great temperament. Even after the adoption, they continue to visit the cafe for activities like puzzles and board games.
To visit Whiskers and Soda, the walk-in rate is $16 for the first hour for adults and $8 for children, with discounted rates for additional hours when booked upfront. Memberships are also available, offering lower rates and the ability to reserve spots in advance. The partnership with A Voice for All Paws has led to 219 cat adoptions so far in 2024, following 628 adoptions in 2023.

Cindy Pennington, alongside her husband John, runs the Casual Cat Cafe in Richland Hills.
