The Cat Lovers Group of Almanzora has initiated a project approximately four weeks ago, aimed at improving the welfare of cats in the community. Comprising a team of dedicated volunteers deeply concerned about feline well-being, the group has established a craft group within Almanzora village. Gatherings are held every Friday at 11am in Bar Andaluz, where members engage in crafting activities, discussions, and event planning sessions focused on aiding cats. Additionally, a donation box has been installed to support their craft projects.
The primary objective of the group is to alleviate the suffering of cats and curb the proliferation of stray felines in the area. To achieve this, they have undertaken the task of regularly feeding and sterilizing the local stray cat population. Founders Wendy Horn, Debbie Sweeny, and Inge Hanuss have been actively involved in feeding and capturing animals, as well as covering the costs associated with food and neutering procedures for the cats. They emphasize the importance of neutering to control the cat population, acknowledging the financial resources required to sustain these efforts.
Despite the implementation of new Animal Welfare Laws in September 2023, aimed at ensuring the well-being of community cats through provisions such as feeding, medical care, and shelter, many regions are still awaiting adequate funding. Consequently, minimal progress has been made in addressing the needs of street cats.
The Cat Lovers Group of Almanzora welcomes new volunteers to join their cause, and they express gratitude for any donations received. The collective efforts of compassionate individuals are crucial in advancing the welfare of cats and fostering a more compassionate community.
