A cat named Ellie from Webster County, Iowa, is on the road to recovery after suffering burns in a shed fire at a special needs shelter in Des Moines.
Ellie, who was initially living as a stray and had recently given birth to a litter of kittens, found refuge in a Webster County home where she was cared for as an outdoor cat. However, tragedy struck in late December when a fire engulfed the shed where Ellie had sought shelter, leaving her with severe burns.
For two to three days, Ellie was missing until two compassionate individuals, aware of her story, located her and brought her to Animal Lifeline of Iowa in Des Moines. Martha Wittkowski, the shelter’s executive director, highlighted the organization’s commitment to caring for animals with unique needs.
“At Animal Lifeline, our focus is on animals with special needs. While they may arrive with these needs, they don’t always leave with them,” Wittkowski explained.
Upon hearing Ellie’s story, Wittkowski emphasized that the shelter was well-equipped to provide the care and support she required. Ellie’s case exemplifies the shelter’s mission to offer assistance to animals in distress, ensuring they receive the necessary attention and compassion without any time constraints.
Today, several months after the tragic fire, Ellie’s recovery is progressing remarkably well. Witnessing Ellie’s healing journey has brought a sense of fulfillment to Wittkowski and the shelter staff, reaffirming their dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
“I am proud to see the difference we’re making in Ellie’s life, along with the lives of all the animals we care for,” Wittkowski remarked.
