A farm owner from Illinois recently shared a hilarious TikTok video showing her cat, named Wednesday, “subletting” the little house she built for her. The clip has gone viral, with internet users amused by the cat’s unexpected tenant.
In the video, posted on Monday under the username @sagewindfarmstead, the farm owner walks up to check on her cat’s small house. When she opens the roof, she is surprised to find a hen sitting comfortably inside with the cat. Amused, she asks the cat, “Are you renting it out? Got an Airbnb situation going on here? How is this working?”
She continues jokingly questioning the cat, wondering if it is “hatching” eggs for the hen, who appears completely unbothered. The video, which has already gathered over 18,500 views and 4,000 likes, includes a caption that reads: “POV: your porch cat has a side hustle.” The caption humorously notes that the farm now receives one to three eggs delivered “directly to the cathouse” every day, thanks to the cat’s entrepreneurial spirit.
Kayla Thompson, the farm’s owner, explained that Wednesday, a semi-feral porch cat she inherited when she moved to the farm, has become a close companion over the years. She built the cat a cozy house filled with straw for warmth and a safe place to sleep. However, Wednesday has recently added a “side hustle” to her routine.
Thompson noticed the cat cohabiting with the chickens in the cat house, and sometimes even sitting on the eggs. “I believe she has started a new side hustle with the chickens,” Thompson said. “I frequently find her cohabitating with the hens.”
While it’s not typical for cats and chickens to live together, experts note that cats, being natural predators, can sometimes attack chickens, especially chicks. Dr. Paola Cuevas from Catster explains that adult chickens and cats can usually coexist peacefully, as cats are less likely to attack once the chickens are grown. However, cats might view baby chicks as prey, even if they only intend to play with them. Despite this, cats can help keep chickens safe from pests, such as mice and snakes, by hunting them away from the barn.
As for the cat’s unusual business venture, commenters on TikTok couldn’t stop laughing. One user joked, “They’re obviously sisters—they have the same colors!” Another quipped, “That chicken is definitely lecturing you about how landlords aren’t allowed to enter without at least 48 hours advanced notice!”
Others shared similar humorous observations, with one comment saying, “Oh, she’s not subletting, they’re sharing the latest farm gossip!”
