The Purrculator Café, a popular cat lounge hosted at Chatham’s Glasshouse Nursery, has reached a significant milestone in its mission to help rescued cats find homes. In partnership with Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR), the café provides an interactive space where visitors can relax with a coffee and spend time with rescued cats.
For a small donation, guests can enjoy the company of the felines and possibly meet their future family members. Since its opening in July, the lounge has successfully helped 50 rescued cats find permanent homes. This achievement aligns with the Glasshouse’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
“Seeing customers bond with these animals and knowing we’re helping them find forever homes has been one of the most rewarding parts of this new venture,” said Spencer Robbins, the general operations manager of the Glasshouse. “It’s been a beautiful reminder of how meaningful small moments can be in the larger story of our business.”
All cats at the lounge are vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. The adoption fee is set at $160. In addition to helping place cats in homes, the café has raised funds for the spaying and neutering of 165 rescued cats, improving animal welfare in the Chatham-Kent area.
Myriam Armstrong, PAWR’s executive director, shared that the community’s response to the lounge has been “overwhelmingly positive.” She added that the lounge has not only created additional space at the shelter but also provided a more relaxed, cage-free environment for some cats.
“The cozy, home-like setting gives potential adopters the chance to connect with cats in a less stressful atmosphere, leading to more thoughtful matches,” Armstrong said. “For cats who find the shelter overwhelming, the lounge has been a game-changer.”
Given the success of the lounge, Armstrong noted that PAWR is open to exploring other locations and setups in the future. “The Cat Lounge has shown that when we bring animals into the heart of the community, incredible things can happen,” she said.
