Choupette, the pampered cat of late fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld, continues to live a life of luxury following her owner’s passing in 2019. At 14 years old, the Birman cat remains in the care of Lagerfeld’s former housekeeper, Françoise Caçote, who shared details of Choupette’s lavish lifestyle in an exclusive interview with Hello! published on April 7.
Living in a Paris apartment with Caçote, her family, and a rescue cat named Siana, Choupette’s life has remained largely unchanged since Lagerfeld’s death. Beyond daily care, Caçote also manages Choupette’s professional career, which includes modeling. The cat has appeared alongside top models like Kendall Jenner, Naomi Campbell, and Gisele Bündchen. “We’re very selective about the shoots we do,” Caçote said. “Choupette has always had the character of a princess, and unfortunately, as she gets older, it doesn’t get any better!”
Lagerfeld was said to have left a substantial inheritance to Choupette, though the exact amount remains unknown. It is speculated that the cat’s fortune, which includes earnings from her modeling career, amounts to millions. Lagerfeld once joked, “She’s a rich girl!” and confirmed that her caretaker would not face financial struggles should anything happen to him.
Despite her status, Choupette’s behavior is nothing short of royal. “She’s the boss here,” said Caçote. “It’s, ‘When I want, how I want, and if I want to be brushed, I’ll be brushed. If I don’t want to be brushed, I won’t be brushed.’” Choupette’s independent nature has been a part of her personality since her younger days.
Though temperamental, Choupette is also described as “darling” by Caçote. The family has adjusted to living with the finicky feline, who also had to adapt when a new rescue cat was introduced to the home. Despite her moody behavior, Choupette continues to enjoy a life of comfort and adoration.
