Hendrix, the much-loved tabby cat from Saltburn, passed away last year at the age of 12, leaving behind a legacy cherished by locals and visitors alike. Known for his frequent trips to the beach and the amusement arcade, Hendrix became a familiar and beloved figure around the seafront. In tribute to his adventurous spirit, a miniature kennel shaped like Saltburn Pier was created for him to enjoy.
After his passing, an online fundraiser was launched with a goal of £4,000 to fund a statue in his honor. The fundraising efforts were successful, and plans for the statue have now been formally submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Council, which has given its approval for the sculpture.
An application by Nathan Bye outlines that the statue will be placed on the Lower Promenade, directly next to a flagpole and near railings that overlook the beach. The life-sized bronze statue has been completed by sculptor Peter Close and is ready for installation.
A letter supporting the application, written by Mr. Bye, highlights Hendrix’s enduring popularity in Saltburn and beyond. “Hendrix was a much-loved figure in Saltburn who was famed for his loving and adventurous nature,” it reads. “He has a large social media following, with fans from all over the world, and his adventures have been featured in both local and national news.”
The letter continues, detailing how Hendrix spent his days greeting visitors on the Lower Promenade, walking along the pier, exploring the beach, and hanging out at local spots like the Pier Amusements, surf shops, and cafes. The memorial statue, according to Mr. Bye, will serve as a fitting tribute to Hendrix’s extraordinary life and the joy he brought to the community, ensuring his legacy lives on for future visitors to Saltburn.
