Disturbing footage has surfaced showing a young woman callously tossing a dead kitten into the water at Port Lincoln Wharf on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. The incident, which took place on Tuesday night, has sparked widespread outrage after it was shared on the Facebook page Aussies Against Animal Abuse.
According to the page, the 21-year-old woman tortured the kitten, believed to be 10 to 12 weeks old, by running it over before swinging it by its tail and throwing it into the harbour while laughing. Shocked bystanders stood frozen, witnessing the appalling act unfold.
Authorities are now investigating the incident. The RSPCA confirmed that a rabbit was also allegedly harmed. A spokesperson for the RSPCA SA stated that they received a report about the alleged abuse on Wednesday morning, involving both the kitten and a deceased rabbit. The spokesperson added that no further details would be released while the investigation continues.
South Australia Police also acknowledged the incident, confirming that they had spoken with the 21-year-old woman after attending a Port Lincoln address. She was subsequently taken to a hospital for an assessment. Police are now working with the RSPCA to investigate potential offenses.
A spokesperson from Aussies Against Animal Abuse shared that a cat rescuer had gone out with a torch to discover the “traumatizing” scene of the kitten and rabbit floating in the harbour. The video, which was initially posted in a community Facebook group, has since been removed.
The group also mentioned that they had contacted the woman’s parents and emphasized that action had been taken. However, they urged members to refrain from further posting, as police and mental health services continue their investigations.
In an online comment, the woman’s mother defended her daughter’s actions, acknowledging the disturbing nature of the footage but stating that her daughter was undergoing a mental health crisis.
Angry viewers who watched the footage online swiftly condemned the woman’s actions. One person wrote, “I find this rather sickeningly downright cruel in every aspect! Those poor innocent and defenceless creatures.” Another commented, “This is extremely upsetting. That poor kitten that was just a baby and that poor rabbit.”
Many also criticized the bystanders who filmed the incident without intervening. One viewer expressed, “The people filming should be punished also for condoning that!! Absolute grubs!” Another stated, “I think the people recording and standing around in a circle not doing anything should be questioned.”
The community continues to demand justice for the animals involved.
