A woman in Louisiana has been charged after authorities discovered 14 dead cats in a freezer and eight others throughout her home.
The Morgan City Police Department reported that 71-year-old Sheri Hite was arrested on Friday and charged with 28 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.
Officers responded to a welfare concern at Hite’s home, where they noticed multiple perishable items left at the front door. They attempted to contact Hite at the front door but received no response. Police then went around to the back of the house, where they were able to speak with her.
Hite allowed the officers to enter her home, where they found the eight dead cats in various rooms, along with the 14 dead cats stored in the freezer. One cat was found alive and was immediately taken to an animal rescue for care.
Hite reportedly told officers she had recently collected the cats from the Baton Rouge area to care for them and kept the dead cats in the freezer for later disposal.
Hite was booked into the Morgan City Jail following her arrest.
