Facing a critical space shortage, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control has waived all fees for cat adoptions. The shelter urgently needs to find homes for 16 cats. To address the overcrowding, they’ve launched a free adoption program, with each cat assigned an ID number to streamline the process.
Among the cats looking for new homes are Chocolate (ID: A1241669), Hamdi (ID: A1241673), and Nunu (ID: A1241674). Gray Boy, Ginger, and Whiskers are also waiting for a loving family.
The shelter’s space issues are not limited to cats. With dog kennels also full, adoption fees for dogs have been reduced to encourage adoptions.
This is the second time in 2025 that the shelter has reached capacity, having sent out an overcrowding notice just last month in February. Regular adoption fees typically range from $83 to $98, depending on the pet’s age and gender.
For those hesitant about adopting, the shelter offers a “Staycation” program, allowing families to temporarily take home a dog to see if they’re a good fit.
If you’re interested in adopting, be sure to note the ID number of the pet you wish to adopt before arriving, as it will help speed up the process.
Visit the shelter at 8315 Byrum Drive. They are open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
