A Redding nonprofit is seeking justice after a local cat was killed in a brutal crossbow attack.
The Northstate Cat Coalition (NCC) received a report on March 1 about a cat with an arrow embedded in its body near Oasis Road and Lake Boulevard. They were able to trap the injured cat, named Dot, who appeared to be in stable condition, and immediately got him medical help.
Staff at the Millville Veterinary Clinic performed surgery, but despite their efforts, Dot passed away that night from his injuries. Now, the NCC is determined to hold Dot’s attacker accountable.
“We hope that he is arrested and that he goes to jail,” said NCC volunteer Cori Casebeer. “It is very difficult to arrest for animal cruelty. You need substantial evidence, and that’s what we’re hoping to gather with this reward. Unfortunately, in rescue work, we often witness abuse. But this case has hit us especially hard because Dot suffered so much, so we are really hoping for prosecution.”
Casebeer explained that Dot was part of a cat colony and was only 7 months old at the time of his death. The attack occurred sometime during the week of February 24.
Initially, a $200 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. With the support of the community, the reward has now grown to $1,550.
The NCC encourages people to use humane methods, such as trap, neuter, and return, to manage feral cat populations.
