A stray cat in Oklahoma has left everyone puzzled after seemingly making an incredible 4,000-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The Sand Springs Animal Welfare shelter in Oklahoma, known for caring for cats, is now faced with a curious case involving a grey feline they recently took in.
“He was in really good condition, so we weren’t sure what was going on, but we scanned him and found he had a microchip,” explained Tracy Anderson, the shelter’s animal welfare coordinator. “We contacted the microchip company, and they informed us that it’s registered in the UK.”
The adventurous cat, now named Samson, traveled an astonishing distance from the UK to the United States, according to The Mirror US. The shelter contacted the animal shelter in the UK, and they found a woman with a matching chip. However, her cat was right there with her, adding more confusion to the situation.
“Her cat was right there with her, so something must have happened when they microchipped the cats,” Tracy said. She believes the cats may have been switched, but the shelter has been unable to trace the other microchip numbers.
Shipping a cat overseas is both expensive and complicated. While the origins of Samson’s journey remain unclear, the grey cat is now up for adoption.
“Someone clearly cared for this cat and spent money to get him here, but it’s hard to say what happened to them. Maybe they passed away or something,” Tracy shared. “But now, he’s with us, and he’ll find a good home no matter what.”
Tracy also emphasized the importance of pet owners registering their animals’ microchips. “It’s crucial to microchip and register your pets because often we get animals with microchips, but we can’t locate their owners,” she said.
