The city of Findlay announced a new initiative on Thursday aimed at managing the local feral cat population in a humane way.
In a press release, the city revealed it is partnering with the Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County and VCA Findlay Animal Hospital to implement a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program.
The TNR process involves humanely trapping feral cats, having them spayed or neutered by a veterinarian, vaccinating them, and ear-tipping them as a sign of sterilization before returning them to their original outdoor homes. Ear-tipping is a recognized indicator that a cat has been spayed or neutered. Trained volunteers will conduct the trapping efforts, according to the city’s release.
The TNR program will officially begin in March and will target the following areas:
- Chateau Estates
- Eastown Estates
- Pine Street
- West Trenton
- West Bigelow
- Quail Lake
- Tiffin Avenue
- Findlay Reservoir
- Hancock County Fairgrounds
The city also urged residents to refrain from feeding feral cats, as it contributes to the overpopulation issue. Feeding encourages cats to become dependent on humans, disrupts their natural hunting behavior, and can interfere with the effectiveness of the TNR program.
