It’s always heartbreaking when pet parents surrender their beloved animals to a shelter, as it shatters the pet’s world. While pet surrenders aren’t always due to negligence—sometimes life changes leave no other option—the pets can’t understand why their lives are suddenly uprooted.
This was the case for two sweet cat siblings, who were recently surrendered to an animal shelter after more than two years of living together. Fortunately, a kind foster parent stepped in, keeping the cats together. However, the poor cats were still scared, confused, and clearly heartbroken.
According to their new foster parent, @krazykatrealtor1, the cats were surrendered when their previous owner developed a cat allergy after two years with them. While medical reasons for surrendering a pet are always tragic, it’s difficult to fault the parent for making such a difficult choice. However, the cats couldn’t understand why they were no longer wanted by their family, nor why they found themselves in an unfamiliar place with a strange person. The female cat was so frightened she wouldn’t leave her carrier, while her brother hid behind a pop-up cat tent, both too terrified to move.
Witnessing the distress these cats were experiencing was truly heartbreaking. Still, TikTokers supported their former owner for making the responsible decision, acknowledging that it was better for the cats to be surrendered to a shelter rather than abandoned.
“As a fellow rescuer, it breaks my heart when animals are surrendered, but I’d rather they be surrendered to an appropriate place than just dumped outside,” said @colbytaco.
“I’m sad but always relieved that some people are considerate enough to surrender them,” commented @nicegirl22me.
Despite the sadness, there’s a small silver lining. Krazy Kat Realtor provided an update after the cats had spent 24 hours in her home. The female cat, Simba (who appears to be a Siamese cat like her brother), is beginning to warm up to her foster mom and is now emerging from her hiding spot for some affection. Her brother Max is still hiding in a cat tower, but with Simba slowly adjusting, it’s only a matter of time before Max does too. The journey ahead will take time, but these cats are safe, cared for, and are on their way to healing.
