A flight carrying 98 shelter cats landed at Boise Airport Tuesday morning as part of a vital airlift coordinated by Greater Good Charities.
The cats, originally from Spencer, Iowa, were flown to Idaho and Oregon in search of new homes.
Out of the 98 cats on board, 55 were welcomed by the Idaho Humane Society in Boise, where they will stay until they are adopted. The remaining cats continued their journey to Oregon for further adoption opportunities.
These cats were previously cared for by People for Pets and the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa. Due to limited adoption demand and resources in the small town of Spencer, the two organizations partnered with Greater Good Charities to relocate the animals to areas with higher adoption rates, such as Boise.
“We’re part of the shelters coalition, so we’re able to identify when other shelters need help,” Laurien Mavey of the Idaho Humane Society explained to KTVB. “If we have the capacity, we step in and transport animals into our shelter.”
Laura Littlebear, Vice President of Field Operations at Greater Good Charities, shared that the organization arranges three to four pet rescue flights each month throughout the year.
“We charter planes,” Littlebear said. “Typically, we run three to four flights per month, and additional flights are added in case of disasters.”
The charity focuses on placing animals in cities like Boise, where shelters have a quick adoption turnover.
“Boise is such an amazing, adoption-driven community,” Mavey added. “If animals stay longer than two weeks, they’re considered long-term.”
Greater Good Charities, an organization dedicated to supporting both people and animals, organized this flight to help Spencer recover from severe flooding last summer, which had strained local shelter resources.
Organizers stated they will continue coordinating pet rescue flights to alleviate overcrowding and enhance animal welfare across the nation.
