The Onslow County Animal Shelter has received a $30,000 grant from Best Friends, an organization dedicated to animal welfare, to help address the area’s growing population of stray animals.
Onslow County has long struggled with an overwhelming number of stray animals, particularly cats. In response, the shelter has teamed up with Paws for Purpose to tackle the issue.
The initiative, called Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), involves humanely trapping stray cats, spaying or neutering them, and then returning them to their original environment. This approach helps reduce the overall stray population while ensuring the animals are not contributing to further breeding.
Tyler Moore, the Animal Services Shelter Manager, explained, “As we approach breeding season, we expect to see more kittens come into the facility starting in March. We hope to ‘beat the heat,’ as we call it, and get ahead of the influx.”
Launched in May 2024, the TNR program will continue with the support of this generous grant.
