The RSPCA has confirmed that its inspectors removed 53 cats, including six kittens, from a property in Victoria’s west yesterday. The home belongs to Christine Weisheit, a serial animal cruelty offender with a history of violating court orders regarding the care of animals.
In December, Weisheit was banned for life from owning or being responsible for more than five cats by the County Court in Ballarat. This latest seizure follows what is believed to be her second violation of that court order.
Weisheit also faces a lifetime ban on possessing more than five horses, a result of inspectors discovering dozens of malnourished horses on her property in 2016. At that time, more than 100 horses were seized, and two had to be euthanized due to their condition.
The 53 cats, taken from Ararat, are now receiving veterinary care for flu symptoms, skin issues, and malnourishment. According to the RSPCA, once the cats are healthy, vaccinated, and microchipped, they will hopefully be placed up for adoption.
The RSPCA has expressed concern over the significant financial burden of caring for animals seized from Weisheit over the years. Michelle Green, chief inspector at RSPCA Victoria, stated, “RSPCA Victoria inspectors have removed more than 380 animals from Ms Weisheit on multiple occasions since 2014.”
“Every animal deserves the care it needs, and people must adhere to all court-ordered disqualifications,” she added.
No charges have yet been filed in connection with the recent seizure, but Weisheit has until February 20 to comply with a 2024 court order restricting her ability to care for horses.
This year, RSPCA Victoria estimates that it will cost over AU$10.7 million (NZ$11.9 million) to operate its inspectorate.
