A Londonderry family has been joyfully reunited with their beloved cat, Kumiko, eight months after she went missing.
The Ambler family received an unexpected call informing them that Kumiko had been found in Ann Arbor, Michigan, though they are unsure how she ended up so far from home. A local shelter had scanned Kumiko for a microchip, which led them back to the Ambler family.
Paul Ambler, Kumiko’s owner, shared an important message, urging people to take extra steps when finding stray animals. “I want to try to increase your awareness. If people find a stray and wonder if they can keep it, the best thing to do is take it to a vet and scan it. It could have torn its collar off and might belong to someone who’s desperately looking for it,” he said.
Since her disappearance, Kumiko has become an indoor cat. Her family reports that she now enjoys cuddling with them and has developed a new “meow,” possibly influenced by a Midwest accent.
The Ambler family is overjoyed to have Kumiko back and is advocating for the importance of microchipping pets.
