Two cats have been rescued following a suspected gas explosion in Bransty, Whitehaven, but two others remain missing. The explosion, which occurred on New Year’s Eve at a terraced house on Hugh Street, left three people seriously injured and forced nearby residents to evacuate.
Four cats were initially reported missing from the house, which was severely damaged and will be demolished, according to the council. Animal Concern Cumbria has been working to locate the animals.
One of the cats, Destiny, was found in the debris of the home and taken to a vet. She suffered burns to her paws and face but is otherwise recovering well, according to the charity. A second cat, Fergal, was discovered on January 6 after being trapped outside his home. He was taken to Animal Concern Cumbria by Mackenzie Leder and volunteers before being examined by Millcroft Veterinary Group.
However, two cats remain unaccounted for. Fenton, one of the missing cats, has been seen nearby but is proving harder to catch. Fenix, the other missing cat, has not been spotted. Fenton is described as a dark tabby with white markings on his legs, while Fenix is a silver cat with faint tabby stripes on her tail.
Animal Concern Cumbria is urging the public to share photos of the missing cats on social media and report any sightings to the charity.
