Over 400 stray cats at the Care Centre in Kampung Kubang Kerian, Pasir Mas, are feared to have perished due to flooding, as the shelter has been submerged under more than two meters of water. The owner, Aejusmida Amang, 27, and several volunteers have not been able to visit the shelter for two days because they, too, were victims of the flooding, with their homes nearly inundated.
“Our last visit to the care centre was two days ago. At that time, the water level inside the building was already chest-high,” Aejusmida said. “As the water continued to rise, we were deeply concerned for the cats’ safety, so we broke part of the ceiling to create a refuge for them.”
Aejusmida added that while they were able to move some of the cats to an older building nearby, many were still trapped in the original shelter. The rapid rise in the water level forced them to evacuate the area quickly. “We managed to provide food for the cats, but it’s been two days now, and that food may have run out,” she said.
Today, Aejusmida attempted to break open the roof of the building to provide the cats with access to higher ground, but was informed that the only route to the care centre had been flooded and could only be accessed by boat. She said she had contacted local authorities, but they were overwhelmed with rescue operations for human victims of the flood, and no help had been provided for the animals so far.
The Care Centre, which opened in February of this year, houses over 400 stray cats that were rescued by local authorities in Pasir Mas. Aejusmida and five other volunteers had established the centre to care for these animals, using a piece of land donated by a local resident.
“We are desperately hoping someone will come forward to help save these cats. If the flooding worsens, there is a real risk that they could be swept away by the current or die from hunger and exposure,” Aejusmida said.
