Somerset County, Pa. – A large-scale animal rescue operation in Windber Borough saw the rescue of nearly 60 cats from a home suffering from severe neglect on Wednesday night, officials said.
The Somerset County Humane Police, along with Windber Borough Police and volunteers from the nonprofit Ninth Life Rescue Center, conducted the operation at a residence on 21st Street. According to the rescue center’s president and founder, Jen Johnson, the conditions inside the home were described as “deplorable” and “uninhabitable,” with the cats suffering from extensive health issues.
Five-Hour Rescue Mission
The operation, which lasted approximately five hours, saw the removal of the cats from what authorities described as dangerous and squalid living conditions. The animals are now in quarantine as they receive medical evaluations.
Johnson said the rescue revealed widespread health problems among the cats, including mammary tumors, flea infestations, and significant injuries. “One cat had already lost an eye, and it was evident the animals were inbred,” she noted. The rescue team will continue to assess their health, but it may take several weeks to months before the animals are ready for adoption.
Investigation Underway, Charges Pending
The Somerset County Humane Police are leading the investigation into the case, and criminal charges are expected to be filed against those responsible for the neglect. Officials have not yet disclosed details about the individuals involved but confirmed that legal action is imminent.
Call for Public Support
As the Ninth Life Rescue Center continues its efforts to care for the rescued cats, Johnson is appealing to the public for help. The rescue center, which operates entirely on donations, is in need of funds to cover medical expenses and other necessities for the animals. Johnson urged the community to visit the center’s Facebook page for updates on the cats’ progress and information on how to contribute.
The rescued cats are currently receiving medical treatment, and updates on their recovery will be posted as they become available. For those interested in helping or adopting, the center will announce when the animals are ready for their forever homes.
Authorities stress that this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and vigilance in reporting signs of neglect.
