SUNRISE, FL– A black cat named George, who found himself trapped in a pipe at Sawgrass Mills Mall, has been rescued after a tense multi-day effort and will soon enjoy the comforts of a new forever home in Sunrise.
The dramatic rescue unfolded in front of the Target at the popular mall, where local resident Holly Rosenberg has been regularly feeding cats. George, a familiar presence to Rosenberg, was notably absent on Thursday night, sparking concern.
“He’s always here waiting when I come to feed him. But Thursday, he was gone,” Rosenberg shared with 7News.
The situation took a turn on Friday when Rosenberg returned to the spot and heard George’s desperate meows coming from underground. Realizing the cat had become trapped inside a pipe, Rosenberg immediately sought assistance.
Sunrise Fire Rescue, plumbers, and animal trappers quickly mobilized, bringing in heavy machinery to excavate around the pipe. The rescue operation involved cutting open the pipe and sending a camera inside to locate the distressed feline.
Plumber Manuel Gil explained the team’s strategy to retrieve George. “We used a snake to try and scare him towards us, and then we were able to pull him out with a sliding noose rope,” he said.
Their efforts paid off, and George was finally pulled to safety, a moment captured on video. He was then wrapped in blankets and placed in a kennel before being rushed to a veterinarian for a thorough checkup and a medicated bath. The vet estimated George’s age to be around 9 or 10 years old.
After spending the night under observation, George will be going home with Rosenberg, who is overjoyed to offer him a permanent place in her family.
“He’s coming home, and he’s going to have a forever home,” Rosenberg said, beaming. “This is the best day of my life.”
George’s ordeal has come to a happy end, thanks to the tireless efforts of the rescue team and the compassion of his new owner.
