Zhang Ping, celebrated in China for creating the beloved cartoon character Luo Xiaohei, is facing widespread backlash after revealing he abandoned the kitten that inspired his famous creation.
Known by the pen name MTJJ, Zhang gained fame as one of China’s leading animators with Luo Xiaohei, an endearing black cat featured in comics, web animations, and a successful movie. However, his reputation took a hit when he became embroiled in disputes on Chinese social media, initially criticizing a video game for alleged sexism.
The situation worsened when a 2019 interview resurfaced, where Zhang admitted to adopting a stray kitten as the basis for Luo Xiaohei but later returning it to the streets after six months, citing difficulties in domestication.
The revelation sparked outrage among fans, contrasting sharply with the storyline where Luo Xiaohei is adopted and nurtured by a family, evoking strong emotions and loyalty from viewers. The backlash has led to calls for boycotting the sequel to “The Legend of Hei,” the successful film based on Zhang’s creation.
Critics have condemned Zhang for setting a poor example for pet owners and highlighted the risks animals face after being abandoned. Zhang’s actions have ignited a broader discussion on responsible pet ownership and the ethical treatment of animals, resonating deeply among animal lovers and fans of his work alike.
